Week 5 - Profiles (Part I)

Tuesday, your first feature story (Assignment #3) was due. I will grade these and have them ready to return to you during the next class meeting.

Feature profiles are a bit different from news profiles. News profiles are usually more biographical in nature. Feature profiles, on the other hand, tend to be about the everyday, unsung heroes…human interest stories that capture personalities by painting word pictures.

Everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone is anxious to tell it. It’s your job to draw the story out and find what makes that person fascinating. Good profiles reveal feelings, expose attitudes, and capture habits and mannerisms. Feature profiles should be as entertaining as they are informative.

Profiles are due this coming Thursday (Feb. 15), so be sure to decide on whom you will be writing about and make an appointment to interview him or her.

Tuesday, we will focus on interviewing techniques. In preparation, please read pages 78 to 85 on interviewing, quotations and attributions.

Note: class was cancelled Thursday (Feb. 8).
